5 new games releasing in June 2024

Key Takeaways

  • June offers a mix of big releases, but Destiny 2: The Final Shape will reel in fans with its 10-year buildup.
  • Killer Klowns from Outer Space presents a chaotic asymmetrical multiplayer horror game worth exploring with friends.
  • Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance appeals to Persona fans with punishing difficulty and a new story for PC, PS5, and Xbox.

The summer months are creeping in and both the weather and game releases are beginning to heat up. There’s no better time of year to close the curtains, turn on the AC, and sink into your couch for hours of gaming. While this month is a little mellow in terms of numbers, the releases there will easily fill up your month in terms of depth. If even one of the big titles or expansions coming in June looks interesting to you, you may not have time for much else.

One game, or DLC I should say, is overshadowing all the other competition in June, but I want to make sure some of these other games aren’t completely overlooked. There’s plenty to pick from this month for fans of all genres and players of all ages besides the hardcore gamers who run various programs. Now that summer is here, and you find yourself with a bit more time on your hands, I’ll help you plan out your June gaming time with the best games coming out this month.

1 Destiny 2: The Final Shape

10 years in the making

Destiny 2

Genre
Sci-fi, MMO, RPG, action, first-person

Developer
Bungie

Release
June 4, 2024

If you’re a Destiny fan, then you have already scheduled time off of work or school and warned your loved ones that you won’t be reachable starting on June 4. The Final Shape has been cooking for longer than most expansions, and for good reason. Bungie is setting this up to be the conclusion to the story arc it started ten years ago when Destiny first launched. The current state of Destiny isn’t so great, and the last expansion soured a lot of player’s opinions on the state of the game, but hopes are high for The Final Shape. Bungie appears to be breaking all the rules with this one to make the conclusion as exciting as possible. We’ll just have to wait and see if it can stick the landing on the narrative.

2024 is far from over but we’ve already had some banger releases. These are the best I’ve played so far.

2 Killer Klowns from Outer Space

What could be scarier?

Killer Klowns from Outer Space

Release Date
June 4, 2024

Genre
Asymetrical multiplayer horror

Developer
Illfonic

After Dead by Daylight single-handedly turned the concept of asymmetrical multiplayer games with the most iconic horror film franchises into a hit, we’ve seen others try to replicate that success. The latest — and strangest — has to be Killer Klowns from Outer Space. This time the team sizes are a bit larger than usual, with three Klowns and seven humans working against each other to save or harvest the people of Crescent Cove. Everything about this game looks as unhinged as the name suggests, and the idea of such a big map, changing objectives, and even some PvPvE elements could make it stick better than most others. At the very least, this is worth a weekend or two with a group of friends.

I’m desperately hoping these games will get the sequels they deserve

Some games are begging for a sequel, but for one reason or another probably never will. Here are the ones that hurt the most.

3 Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance

The OG Persona

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance

Release Date
June 13, 2024

Genre
JRPG

Developer
ATLUS

If you feel like this game came out already, you’re right. SMT V was released last year, but as a Switch exclusive. Now, with the Vengence edition, players on PC, PS5, and Xbox can experience this brutal JRPG. If you’re a Persona fan, you will want to pay attention to this game since SMT was the origin of the Persona spin-off series. While it does share many of the same elements, mainly capturing and battling demons, fusing them, and turn-based battles, there are some key differences. The biggest would be the lack of the entire social angle Persona offers, as well as the much more punishing difficulty. This version comes with an expanded story and some quality-of-life features, so give it a shot if you’ve mastered Persona and need something in that same style.

4 Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree

Back to the Lands Between

Elden Ring

Genre
Action role-playing game

Developer(s)
FromSoftware

Release
June 21, 2024

After two years, FromSoftware is finally ready to let loose the one and only DLC for Elden Ring. Shadow of the Erdtree has some significant hype to live up to. Not only was Elden Ring regarded as one of the best games of all time, but FromSoftware’s DLCs have consistently been the best parts of each game they make. I don’t know if it’s possible to replicate it here, but at the very worst, I would guess this DLC will be on par with the base game. Lore junkies will have plenty to sink their teeth into here, while the rest of us can look forward to new bosses, regions to explore, weapons, ashes, and who knows what else. Details have been kept minimal, but that has only added to the excitement.

5 Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD

Bustin’ ghosts in HD

Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD

Genre
Adventure/ Puzzle

Release Date
June 27, 2024

Developer
Nintendo

I’m wrapping up the month with one more remake. This time, it’s Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD, which is finally bringing the overlooked Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon off the 3DS and to the wider Switch audience. As great as Luigi’s Mansion 3 is, it did feel a little limited in creativity by keeping you stuck in a single hotel for the entire game. Dark Moon, or simply 2 now, felt like the real evolution from the first game by sticking to the mansion format, but simply adding multiple mansions to explore. This allowed each one to feel unique and gave you more options on where to explore. It has a simple plot just like the rest, but is full of charm and kid-friendly spooks to make it fun for the whole family.
